Moving to multi lingual

I’ve been debating this one with myself for quite a while and I am still not 100% convinced it is the right move, so any thoughts on this are highly appreciated. As some of you may know I have a Dutch version of Simone’s Kitchen as well and while it works well I have to maintain two sites instead of one. A solution would be the WPML translation plugin and I didn’t use this before since the plugin was not compatible with my template, but…. since the upgrade it is! I’m excited about it, as it is my favorite template and I would hate to loose the flexibility so that’s all good. So I have started translating, which is a monster job ofcourse, although I can move all the content from here to there so it won’t be an actual translation.

The new English url will be http://simoneskitchen.nl/en/ and if you want to keep up to date with new content I have also registered it on BLOGLOVIN’. Follow that link and you’ll only see the English posts, not the Dutch ones. At the moment there are only a handful of posts online in the English side of things but there will be more soon and all new posts will automatically be in both languages (well not automatically ofcourse… I wish!)

I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this and keep in mind that this blog will be alive for a long time to come too, but just won’t get any new content. Any old content that I moved over will be redirected to the ‘other side’ So you won’t see much of a difference really…

Simone, I also have been thinking about offering my blog not only in English, but also in German, but didn’t want to have to write two blogs. Does that WP plugin really work? I think I will have to look into it.

Kirsten it works very well, but you have to make sure that the template you are using is compatible with the plugin. if not it will not work properly. You can check out all the details on wpml.org and if I can give a recommendation make sure you also include the string translations (these make sure that all texts on your site will be multi lingual as well) It takes some getting used to but for me it works. You can check it out on simoneskitchen.nl, where I now have two languages running…

Will the English version only be available through Bloglovin”, not as email updates? Thanks.

    He Mary,
There is also an RSS feed and the accompanying email subscription and I am figuring out how to work with the feeds on language level. This one is separate anyway so you can fill in the form and it will send you the latest english updates!

Here’s my attempt at keep up with you again this year, Simone, as promised. Hope we renew our conversations this year around food. Bilingual sites are hard with translators. Canada is a bilingual country, and the translators are terrible. Have you had someone read the posts that is native to the language you are translating into… I am assuming you are writing in Dutch and translating to English? This post reads well, if it is a translated one. I would be happy to read a couple for you and provide feedback.
    :)

Thanks so much Valerie. I’m actually not using a translator, I do all the translating myself. You’re used to reading me in English so that will be exactly the same. So yes it’s extra work in the beginning but eventually it will end up being less or so I hope…:) This version of Simone’s Kitchen will be merged with the Dutch one, so you should be following http://simoneskitchen.nl/en/ :)
That’s where all the new posts will appear. And all the older ones at some point too! And yes, we should definitely be better at keeping in touch with each other this year… :)

Momenteel pakt Bloglovin automatisch mijn Nederlandse artikelen.
